Wisconsin has, quietly and without the marketing budgets of Arizona or the Carolinas, assembled two destination golf resorts that belong in any serious conversation about American golf travel. Sand Valley, in the glacial sand country near Nekoosa, and Destination Kohler, on the Lake Michigan shore near Sheboygan, sit roughly three hours apart by car. This itinerary connects them in a five-night road trip that covers the architectural spectrum from Coore-Crenshaw minimalism and Doak historical recreation to Pete Dye's dramatic lakeside designs.
Fly into Madison (MSN) and drive 97 miles north to Sand Valley. Check into Sand Valley Lodge.
Morning round on The Lido. Tom Doak and Brian Urbina's recreation of C.
Check out of Sand Valley in the morning. The drive to Kohler is approximately three hours east through Central Wisconsin farmland and small towns.
Morning round on the Straits Course at Whistling Straits. Pete Dye's design along the Lake Michigan shoreline is the centrepiece of the Kohler side of the trip.
The final day is deliberately unstructured. Options include a second round at Kohler (Blackwolf Run Meadow Valleys or Whistling Straits Irish are both excellent), a morning at the Kohler Waters Spa, or a visit to the Kohler Design Center.
Check out of The American Club. Drive to Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE), approximately one hour south, or to Madison (MSN), approximately two hours west, depending on flight routing.
This itinerary requires a rental car for the full trip. The Madison airport pickup and Milwaukee or Madison return creates a logistical consideration: one-way rental fees may apply if dropping at a different airport. Check rental car policies when booking. All Sand Valley tee times book directly through the resort. Kohler tee times book through Destination Kohler. The American Club is available on Booking.com. Sand Valley Lodge is direct-book only.
The three-hour drive on Day 3 is the trip's only significant logistical challenge, and it is best treated as part of the experience rather than a transfer to be minimized. The Wisconsin countryside between Nekoosa and Sheboygan is genuinely pleasant driving.
