Pete Dye designed all four courses in the Kohler portfolio, a distinction that makes this destination singular in American resort golf. No other resort offers four courses by the same architect, each built on different terrain and separated by a decade of design evolution. This itinerary plays them in chronological order of opening, which reveals how Dye's approach to the Wisconsin landscape changed as the property expanded from a single riverside course to a lakeside complex that has hosted three PGA Championships and the 2021 Ryder Cup.
Fly into General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee (MKE), 63 miles south, and drive the hour and ten minutes north to Kohler. Green Bay's Austin Straubel Airport (GRB) is a comparable distance from the north.
The River Course occupies the most dramatic terrain in the Kohler portfolio. Dye routed the layout through glacially carved land along the Sheboygan River, and the elevation changes are substantial enough to alter club selection by one or two clubs on several approach shots.
The shuttle to Whistling Straits departs from The American Club and covers the 10 miles to the lakeside complex in 20 to 25 minutes. The Irish Course sits just inland from the Straits Course and plays through treeless, rugged terrain inspired by Irish links.
The signature round. The Straits Course at Whistling Straits runs along the Lake Michigan shoreline with over 1,000 bunkers, many of them concealed in fescue or half-buried in dune grass.
A rental car is useful for off-resort activities but not strictly necessary. The American Club provides complimentary shuttle service to Whistling Straits, and Blackwolf Run is adjacent to the hotel. Rental cars from Milwaukee run $30 to $75 per day. The golf season runs May through October; June through September offers the best weather, with July and August averaging highs near 79 degrees. The American Club's golf packages, booked directly through kohlerwisconsin.com or 855-444-2838, typically offer better value than assembling the trip from individual bookings. Club rentals are available at $100 per person per round for those traveling without equipment.
