This itinerary spans the full range of what the Sandhills offer: championship resort golf, restored Donald Ross architecture, an avant-garde design that polarises by intention, and the institutional home of American golf. The four courses cover three distinct design philosophies across venues separated by less than 30 minutes of driving. The trip begins on the Pinehurst Resort campus and moves off-campus for the second half, which keeps lodging costs in check while preserving access to the headline courses.
Fly into Raleigh-Durham (RDU) and drive the 73 miles south to Pinehurst. Check into The Carolina Hotel, which places you on the resort campus within walking distance of the courses, the pro shop, and Golf House Pinehurst.
The round that anchors the trip. Donald Ross's masterwork, restored by Coore and Crenshaw to its sandy, wiregrass-bordered original.
Gil Hanse's 2018 redesign is the resort's other marquee course and, in the opinion of many returning visitors, its most enjoyable round. Where No.
Two rounds in one day, each offering a fundamentally different experience. Mid Pines is Donald Ross at his most natural: a 1921 design restored by Kyle Franz in 2013, routing gently through longleaf pines with green complexes that reward position over power.
Check out of Mid Pines and drive to RDU, approximately one hour and twenty minutes. An early departure allows a morning walk through Pinehurst Village or a final visit to the Tufts Archives before heading to the airport.
The Carolina Hotel serves as the base for Days 1 through 3, with the shift to Mid Pines Inn for Days 3 and 4. The mid-trip move adds a brief logistical step but reduces driving on the Tobacco Road day and places you within walking distance of Southern Pines dining for the final two evenings. A rental car is necessary for the Tobacco Road day and the airport transfers. The resort shuttle covers on-campus transportation for Days 1 through 3.
The package structure matters for budgeting. Two nights at The Carolina with rounds on No. 2 and No. 4 will form the core of the resort package. The Mid Pines stay operates independently with its own pricing. Booking the resort and Mid Pines components separately allows more flexibility than attempting to bundle everything through a single provider.
