The most relaxed of the three Sea Island courses, routed through mature live oaks and marshland at a length that invites enjoyment over endurance.
The Retreat Course is the third course in the Sea Island Golf Club collection, and its name communicates its intent accurately. Joe Lee designed the original layout in 1975, and Davis Love III and Mark Love renovated it in 2001. At 6,490 yards from the back tees and par 72, the Retreat is substantially shorter than both the Seaside and the Plantation, and the difference in yardage translates to a difference in experience. This is a course designed for enjoyment rather than examination.
The routing moves through mature live oaks on St. Simons Island, with marsh views appearing at intervals along the back nine. The oaks are the dominant feature, their canopies creating shaded corridors that feel removed from the heat and exposure of the coastal courses. The fairways are generous, the forced carries are minimal, and the green complexes, while well shaped, do not present the kind of puzzles that the Plantation's greens demand. A golfer playing the Retreat on the afternoon of arrival, after a flight and a drive, will find a course that welcomes rather than challenges.
That accessibility is not the same as a lack of interest. Lee's original routing used the terrain efficiently, and the Love renovation refined the green surrounds and bunkering to create scoring opportunities for golfers who are paying attention. The par 5s are reachable for longer hitters, and the par 3s present clean targets with enough green contour to make two-putts the expected outcome rather than a certainty. The course plays quickly, which matters for afternoon rounds when daylight is a consideration during the shorter winter months.
The green fee of $175 to $245 includes cart, range balls, and club cleaning. The Retreat does not include the forecaddie programme that operates on the Seaside and Plantation, which is consistent with the course's positioning as the more casual option. Access remains limited to resort guests, booked directly through Sea Island.
The 133 slope is the lowest of the three Sea Island courses, and the 6,490-yard length places it within comfortable range for golfers of varying abilities. For groups that include mixed handicaps, the Retreat provides the most level playing field. For serious golfers spending multiple days at Sea Island, the Retreat fits naturally as the first or last round of the trip, bookending the more demanding Seaside and Plantation with a round that prioritises the setting over the scorecard.
Resort guest access only. Book directly through Sea Island Resort. The green fee covers cart, range, and club cleaning but does not include forecaddie service. The course is the best option for afternoon arrival rounds and for groups with varying skill levels.
The Retreat's value lies in what it does not try to be. In a resort collection that includes a PGA Tour venue and a Golden Age redesign, the Retreat provides a round that is about live oaks, marsh views, and the pleasure of playing golf in a beautiful setting without the pressure of a course that demands peak performance. That role is essential, and the Retreat fills it well.
