Meadow and river golf at the base of Northstar with Truckee River frontage
Gray's Crossing opened in 2007 at the base of Northstar California, routed through meadows and along the Truckee River by Peter Jacobsen, Jim Hardy, and Gage Davis. The course operates as the second semi-private layout under Tahoe Mountain Club, pairing naturally with Old Greenwood for groups booking multiple rounds in the Truckee corridor. Public tee times are released thirty days in advance.
At 7,466 yards, Gray's Crossing plays long on paper but the altitude and downhill tee shots reduce the effective distance. The character of the course shifts between two distinct environments: open meadow holes where wind becomes a factor and tree-lined corridors along the river where accuracy takes priority. The Truckee River appears on multiple holes and serves as both a visual anchor and a legitimate hazard.
The greens are receptive and moderately contoured, making this the most approachable of the three mid-range courses in the Truckee area. The design does not punish as aggressively as Old Greenwood or challenge visually like Coyote Moon, but it offers a fluid, rhythmic round that rewards solid ball-striking.
Green fees range from $100 to $230. The two-course package with Old Greenwood through tahoemountainclub.com is the most efficient way to book both layouts. The course is approximately ten minutes from downtown Truckee and directly adjacent to Northstar, making it a convenient pairing with the Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe for groups staying on that end of the corridor.
Gray's Crossing is the course in the Truckee cluster that plays the most naturally with the landscape. The river routing gives it a character distinct from the forest courses nearby, and the meadow holes open up views that the pine corridors do not offer. It is the complementary round to Old Greenwood, and the package pricing makes playing both a straightforward decision.
