A 38-room Scandinavian castle from 1929 reached by a one-mile trail above Emerald Bay
Vikingsholm is a 38-room Scandinavian-style castle built in 1929 by Lora Josephine Knight at the head of Emerald Bay. The structure is considered the finest example of Scandinavian architecture in North America, with hand-hewn timbers, sod roofs, and period furnishings that reflect Knight's study of medieval Norse buildings during her travels in Scandinavia. The castle is accessible only by a one-mile trail that descends approximately 500 feet from the parking area at Inspiration Point, which means the return trip is a sustained uphill walk.
The site sits within Emerald Bay State Park, one of the most visited natural areas in the Sierra Nevada, and the trail offers continuous views of the bay and Fannette Island during the descent.
Vikingsholm is a genuinely surprising piece of architecture in an unlikely setting. The craftsmanship is remarkable, and the decision to build at the base of a trail rather than at road level gives the approach a sense of discovery that conventional historic sites lack. The combination of the trail views, the bay, and the castle itself makes this the most culturally substantial activity in the Lake Tahoe region. At effectively $15 per person, it is also among the most affordable.
